After-School Activities

After-School Activities - 1st Semester

Activities meet from 3:30 to 4:20. Students must be off campus by 4:30.
Clubs begin the week of September 10th and end the week of December 7th. 
There will be no after school activities the week of October 15th, November 5th, or November 26th. 
The last week of 1st Semester After School Activities will be the week of December 10th.

7th Grade Jazz Band
The 7th Grade Jazz Band is a student ensemble committed to learning and performing jazz. This group meets on Tuesdays after school. We are looking for students who play any of the following instruments: saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano, guitar, bass, or drum set. This ensemble usually performs 2 concerts during the school year. Students who would like to join this group should see Mr. Stevison in Rm. 125. to pick up the audition music.

8th Grade Jazz Band
This ensemble will play a variety of standard jazz styles including: swing, rock, Latin and funk. We will be using the standard jazz ensemble set up which usually comprises Saxophones, Trumpets, Trombones, Guitar, Bass Guitar, Piano, Drum Set. The purpose of auditions is for Mr. Stevison and Mrs. Tokos to hear a sample of everyone’s playing ability in a jazz style. We may take a larger number of students depending upon audition results. We will perform a concert at Delmar Hall with the WGHS Jazz Bands in January (TBD) and at the Fine Arts Festival in May.

Wind Ensemble
The Wind Ensemble is an advanced-level student ensemble committed to learning and performing band music. This group meets on Wednesdays after school. We are looking for students who play any of the following instruments: flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, saxophone, French horn, trumpet, trombone, baritone, tuba, or percussion. This ensemble usually performs 2 concerts during the school year. Students who would like to join this group should see Mr. Stevison/Mrs. Tokos in Rm. 125. to pick up the audition music.

Hixson String Symphony
Hixson String Symphony is an extracurricular orchestra for any students who play violin, viola, cello, or bass. Students must have at least 1 year of experience or more on their instrument. We will occasionally team up and perform songs with the band to give you a symphony-like experience! We meet on Wednesdays only after school for the entire school year.

Flute Choir 
This flute ensemble will play a variety of music. 1st Semester - is only for 7th and 8th grade flute students.  We will invite 6th grade flute students during the 2nd semester.  We plan on performing once per semester.  Offered on Tuesdays. 1 hour a week, students must have experience playing the flute. See Ms. Mangrich for any information!

Best Buddies
Best Buddies fosters friendships between students of all abilities. We plan many fun events each year and participate in Special Olympics bocce as well as run the victory village for the Special Olympics track and field day. We meet on Wednesdays after school.

Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA)
Students of all identities and gender expressions will be welcome to come and be themselves. This is a student led club that includes activities like karaoke, playing board games, coloring, and watching movies. GSA is open to all Hixson students!

Hixson Leaders
Hixson student leaders will serve as ambassadors to our school and community by being a part of different sub-groups which include helping run the Hixson Food Pantry / running food drives, promoting and creating Spirit Week ideas, and creating Statesmen Time lessons that help promote school spirit and inclusivity for all students.

Hixson student-athletes will sharpen their mental and fundamental skills in the game of baseball.

Football Club
This club is designed for all students who are passionate about football or want to learn more about the game. This is a great opportunity to learn about teamwork with a blend of physical activity, gaming, and real-world football experiences.

Board Games Club
Board Games Club is a time for people to meet up with other kids who like to play games. Meet up with friends and make new ones while playing a variety of board games, card games, and more. Many games are provided for students to choose from, but students may also bring in their own to teach others to play.

Book Battle!
Book Battle is an area wide trivia competition in which a group of students read 20 books and learn them inside and out and then, attend a trivia tournament regarding them. The teachers also read the books in order to assist with development of practice questions and games to play during the meetings. We love to read, eat snacks, and have fun!

Dungeons and Dragons
This club will be held on Tuesday and Thursday. The maximum number of students who may participate is 10. Students will build characters, workshop backgrounds, and help new players plan how they will play their characters roles and how to manage the mechanics of the game.

Robotics
Our program is a part of the  FIRST® LEGO® League Challenge through a sponsorship with Ranken. FIRST® LEGO® League introduces science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) to children ages 4-16* through fun, exciting hands-on learning. Participants gain real-world problem solving experience through a guided, global robotics program, helping today's students and teachers build a better future together. This is a competition team who competes in city (St. Louis) wide competition which could potentially compete state or nationally.

Thrive Jr. (6th Grade Only)
Have you ever wanted to start your own business? Join our club, Thrive Jr., powered by Freshinc. Club members will progress through the milestones of starting up a new business: they identify a problem to solve, design and pitch a product concept, and make and possibly sell this product. The club will participate in a district-wide pitch competition in December and April.

Come join Hixson's new MATHCOUNTS Club for fun math challenges and games! Whether you love math or just want to try something new, this club is for you. Yearbook
Want to be a part of recording the history of Hixson? We are looking for a few reliable, hard working students for the yearbook staff.  Space is very limited and good attendance is necessary. Meetings are on Thursdays (but Tuesday & Wednesdays could be added as needed). See Mrs. Burton or Mr. Hesiel if you have questions.

School Play
All Hixson students are welcome to audition regardless of experience. The play will be “Law & Order: Fairytale Unit”. Auditions will be held September 10th, 11th and 12th. Rehearsals will be Tuesday-Thursday from 3:30 to 4:30. The performances will be December 4th and 5th 2024. 25 students max.

International Drum Circle
Students will learn about many countries and practice drum rhythms common to them. No experience required, but must be able to listen to each other, get in sync, and keep a beat with the group after practicing.

Mystery at the Middle School
Participants will share their love of mystery by exploring the mystery genre through books, movies, tv series, games, lock box activities and online escape rooms. This club can accommodate 12 students per semester.
